I am trying to install these plugins following the ModelicaML: Getting Started guide dated 13 Feb 2012, but the update URL does not seem to be correct. Using this URL:
http://www.ida.liu.se/~pelab/modelica/OpenModelica/MDT/
Eclipse tells me 'There are no categorized items'
What is the correct update site URL?

Just remove the tick for Categories and you will find the MDT update as we have no category for it.
