Terms of Service
Last updated: 2026-09-17
These terms apply to the openmodelica.org website and to the OpenModelica software and related services published by the Open Source Modelica Consortium (OSMC), including OMEdit, OMC, OMSimulator, OMShell, OMNotebook and OMPython.
By using the website or the software, you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, please do not use them.
The software is open source, and its licence comes first
OpenModelica is free and open source software. Your rights to use, copy, modify and redistribute it are granted by the applicable licence — the OSMC Public License (OSMC-PL) or the GNU AGPL version 3, at your choice, as stated in the distribution. Third-party components carry their own licences.
Where these terms and a licence disagree, the licence wins. Nothing here takes away a right the licence gives you, and nothing here is a warranty or a support commitment that the licence disclaims.
What we provide
We make the software, its source code, its documentation and this website available free of charge, on a best-effort basis. We do not promise that the website, the download servers, the library index or the nightly builds will be available, complete, accurate or uninterrupted, and we may change or withdraw any of them at any time.
There is no service-level agreement and no obligation to provide support. Commercial support and membership arrangements are a separate matter; see the consortium page.
No cloud service — computation happens on your computer
OpenModelica is desktop software. Modelling, compilation and simulation run locally on your own hardware. We do not host your models, we do not execute them for you, and we do not store your data. You are responsible for your own models, results and backups.
Cloud storage connections
OMEdit can connect to third-party cloud storage providers, currently Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive, so that you can open and save models there.
- The connection is made directly between your computer and the provider. OSMC operates no server in that path.
- You need your own account with the provider, and your use of it is governed by that provider’s terms and privacy policy, in addition to these terms.
- You are responsible for what you store there, for the access you grant, and for complying with the provider’s rules and with any confidentiality obligations that apply to your files.
- You can withdraw OMEdit’s access at any time, from within OMEdit or from the provider’s own account settings.
- Providers can change or discontinue their APIs. If that breaks the feature, we will do what we reasonably can, but we cannot guarantee continued interoperability.
We are not responsible for the availability, security, pricing or conduct of third-party services, and we are not a party to your agreement with them.
Acceptable use
When using this website and our servers, you agree not to:
- attempt to gain unauthorised access to any system, account or data, or to probe, scan or test the security of our infrastructure without permission;
- interfere with or disrupt the service, for example by overwhelming our servers with automated requests — please be considerate when mirroring or scripting downloads;
- use our servers to distribute malware or unlawful material, or to violate the rights of others.
We may block access from addresses that do any of the above.
Contributions
If you contribute code, documentation or other material to OpenModelica, that contribution is covered by the Contributor License Agreement and the project’s licence terms, not by this page.
Trademarks and content
The OpenModelica name and logo belong to OSMC. Website content is provided for information; you may quote and link to it, but please do not present it as your own or in a way that suggests OSMC endorses you. “Modelica” is a registered trademark of the Modelica Association.
No warranty
The software and the website are provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement.
Simulation results are only as good as the models and the settings you give the tools. You are responsible for validating results before relying on them, particularly for any safety-related, financial or otherwise critical decision.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, OSMC, its members and its contributors are not liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for lost profits, lost data or business interruption, arising from the use of, or the inability to use, the software, the website or any linked third-party service.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
Changes
We may update these terms. The date at the top always reflects the most recent revision, and continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Sweden, without regard to conflict of law rules, and disputes shall be brought before the competent courts of Sweden. This does not deprive a consumer of the protection of mandatory law in their own country of residence.
